nineties house
(from my house)

“I wrote this song out of a desire to fall in love with my life again.”

I didn’t expect 'nineties house’ to root itself so deeply into my heart. It was written off the cuff and recorded rather plainly, without much thought around releasing it. Cairo and I had been talking about the future and somehow I got around to fixating on the idea of owning a 90’s house.

At the time I was (more than) dissatisfied with the place we were living in, and all the things that people wish for started creeping their way into my head. “I wish I had this and that and this and that…”

I figured I had better journal it out, and while I was in the middle of writing it all down, I felt an immense wave of embarrassment foam over me, followed by a more forgiving feeling of gratitude. We were building a beautiful life together, and I was completely missing the point (as I often do). This was my ‘nineties house’.

I wrote this song out of a desire to fall in love with my life again; find a way to embrace the mundane and ordinary— reinstate devotion and commitment as the ‘ideal’. Sometimes I still get caught up in wanting what I don’t have, but I always come back to a place of gratitude, acceptance, and hope.

Paul graciously offered to mix a live version of “nineties house”— thoughtlessly recorded on my little apartment-sized piano at home. I might be partial to this version!
